Comma Recruitment are looking for a high level Personal lines Underwriter with a minimum of 8 years experience in personal lines, including a minimum of 3 years in a senior or specialized  underwriting role

A University degree and/or active participation in CIP courses or equivalence

Ability to identify new ideas, techniques and opportunities for improvement

A strategic leader, experienced within a broker distribution channel and familiar with market conditions

Previous staff management experience including hiring, performance, and salary management

Ability to lead, influence, direct, negotiate and advise others is required

Ability to develop and deliver verbal/written explanations of information to superiors, peers, brokers , and the regions underwriting team in a well thought out, logical and effective manner

Ability to take evaluated risks or initiate actions to capitalize on opportunities

Senior Personal Lines Underwriting Specialist – Toronto $65k – $70k

Over 5 years progressive experience with at least 2+ in a Senior Personal Lines Underwriting role, must have a great knowledge of Underwriting products and guidelines in Personal Lines, experience in Commercial an asset though not essential.

You will be responsible for the planning and supervision of  Corporate Underwriting projects, implementing corporate strategy and business plans.

Responsible for the research and gathering of technical underwriting information internally and externally

Develop new products and enhancing existing ones, prepare, submit & respond to government filings and mandates

Maintaining relations with government regulatory bodies, industry groups and underwriting vendors and communicating relevant information to internal stakeholders

Monitor underwriting operational processes/procedures in order to identify trends that require corporate underwriting action.

Act as the primary resource for gathering technical underwriting information and feedback from cross functional areas.

Provide technical counsel and coverage intent and wording interpretation to Underwriting and Claims operations.

Act as a technical source in identifying opportunities and challenges as well as any relevant changes in the marketplace/competitive environment.

Ongoing review and revision of underwriting rules and guidelines for various lines of business to ensure competitiveness, profitability and ideal risk selection.

Develop technical underwriting training material, programs and deliver training to underwriting personnel as required to effectively implement changes

Acquire and maintain current knowledge of industry trends, developments, regulatory changes to ensure that company, broker and customer needs are met

Responsible for liaising and communicating with cross-functional areas in order to ensure that Underwriting projects and activities are completed effectively

Compile, organize and analyze various reports for the department and management.

Drill down in analysis to understand problem. Recommend changes to improve performance, and assists with communications and implementation.

Special projects and other duties as assigned, Travel outside the office to industry functions, as required.

Maintains contact with cross functional staff and management as well as, external contact with printing firms, industry contacts, and other external vendors

Required

Minimum 5+  years underwriting experience with knowledge of General Insurance and associated terminology is a must.

Experience in an Underwriting Specialist or Management capacity is preferred

Working towards or completion of CIP

Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret insurance contracts and changes in interpretation as a result of case or statutory law

Strong knowledge of technical underwriting methodologies, rating programs, sources for risk information, and system workflows

Strategic mindset coupled with exceptional analytical and communication skills (oral and written) will allow you to influence and engage others

Previous experience in the development of training materials and facilitation of technical (underwriting) training to staff

Able to work well independently, with minimal supervision and as part of a team.

A self starter, detail oriented with strong organizational skills.

Adjudicate and manage short and long term disability claims. Provide efficient and timely service to all key stakeholders.

Main Accountabilities:

  • Review claim forms, medical reports, investigation reports, contract provisions etc. and determine eligibility of claim
  • Record inbound/outbound communication
  • Provide written and verbal communication to claimants, clients, administrators, doctors, lawyers, other insurers, etc: re: claim inquiries and outcome
  • Review claims with Medical Director and Legal Department as required
  • Assess waiver of premium eligibility

Bilingual Personal Lines Underwriter

Comma Recruitment are hiring a Bilingual Personal lines Underwriter for a Mississauga service centre. You will respond to all telephone and email inquiries regarding group home and auto insurance.

Utilizing underwriting skills and judgment to process and underwrite moderately complex files by recognizing and evaluating and minimizing risk, establishing rating criteria and determining policy terms and conditions according to the company’s auto and property underwriting guidelines and within binding authority limits.

  • Respond and fulfill existing and prospective customers’ insurance needs in a customer care environment.
  • Provide expert customer service and an exceptional client experience.
  • Communicate with customers via phone or email in a timely and effective manner.
  • Sell (including up-selling and cross-selling) personal lines insurance products to customers across Canada, and obtain prospects , in order to contribute to profitable growth.
  • Qualify clients and ensure that sufficient underwriting information is obtained to assess exposure, ensure risk eligibility and rating adequacy.
  • Process applications, order and review various reports (MVR, Autoplus, HITS, RCT, etc.), and underwriting questionnaires to determine degree of risk and acceptability of risk. Secure additional information if needed.
  • Recommend insurance coverage and suggest/promote alternative products or services.
  • Underwrite moderately complex personal lines insurance risks (broker & direct) and process new business transactions, endorsements, renewals and cancellations. Assess and evaluate risks in order to accept, modify, or reject insurance contracts in accordance with company objectives, underwriting policies, standards & procedures, applicable laws & regulations, and within established authority level, in order to develop and retain profitable business.
  • Review all relevant claims reports, secure additional information as required, and take appropriate underwriting actions to ensure company standards are upheld.
  • Provide technical and underwriting advice to team members.
  • Maintain insurance licenses in all provinces where we write business.

 

We’re looking for someone with:

A College Diploma and / or working towards a Chartered Insurance Professional designation

At least 1 year of experience in a similar role

Bilingual in written and spoken English & French.

Excellent written and verbal skills in order to respond to inquiries or complaints.

Ontario OTL license, other provincial/territorial licenses.

Knowledge of personal lines insurance guidelines and products.

Computer literate with good keyboard skills.

Detail oriented multi tasking, using system support tools.

Demonstrate efficiency and priority management skills to meet service standards.

Ability to work in and support a team-based environment.

Must be able to work Monday to Friday between the hours of 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. and be flexible to accommodate a variety of rotating shifts.
