Job Responsibilities

Underwriting: Analyzing Risk and Placing Business

  • Maintain knowledge of carriers’ underwriting guidelines and/or brokerage markets

  • Negotiate prices, terms, and conditions
  • Submit quality submissions to markets

  • Ensure all files are documented properly to avoid potential E&O’s
  • Maintain carrier relationships
  • Stay abreast of underwriting practices and maintain licenses and certifications

Mentorship: 

  • Train, develop, and nurture assistant/associate underwriters
  • Help manage priorities and workload of underwriters on your team
  • Cultivate trust, lead by example, and maintain an open door for team

Sales: New Business Development and Renewals 

  • Develop broker clientele by networking to identify new clients and brokers
  • Conduct marketing visits to build broker relationships and advertise our offerings
  • Maintain existing broker relationships to solicit renewals and generate new business
  • Build and develop markets/relationships
  • Develop marketing strategies to compete with other companies
  • Ensure prompt and courteous client service is provided to all brokers

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of full time underwriting experience, MGA experience preferred but not essential as the focus on this role will be underwriting more than business development
  • CIP, CRM, FCIP or comparable designations preferred

The Risk Control Consultant will be required to assess various properties and provide loss prevention recommendations to reduce the frequency and severity of losses.

The Risk Control Consultant will also be responsible for developing and maintaining a collaborative relationship with the Leadership and Underwriters in the Commercial Insurance department and the Claims department.

 

  • Assess commercial property and commercial auto risks to identify and evaluate exposures
  • Evaluate operational and safety practices including exposures and hazards
  • Communicate exposures, loss information, recommendations and opinion of risk to assist the underwriting department, as well as assist with educating policy holder and broker of exposures.
  • Travel to insured’s properties to complete risk assessments, as well as the ability to work remotely to conduct virtual assessments.
  • While touring the properties, take photographs, measure rooms and the structure, inspect features such as fire prevention systems, heating equipment, and fuel storage tanks
  • Submit reports in a narrative format to the underwriting department
  • Adhere to customer requirements and quality standards
  • Develop presentations and seminars relating to property and liability risk mitigation as well as fleet risk management
  • Maintain confidentiality and act with integrity

 

Required Skills and Attributes:

 

  • Ability to observe and evaluate potentially hazardous conditions and make recommendations
  • Background in construction, safety, fire safety and risk services
  • Basic knowledge and education in safety inspections on commercial or residential properties is required
  • Experience scoping and estimated is an asset as is experience in commercial insurance claims
  • Be familiar with and have the ability to interpret building codes and related standards
